I've never been completely comfortable with painting. I hold a pencil differently than most people and I can't hold a brush like that, so it's often a bit odd for me. I paint on occasion, but it's definitely not one of my preferred mediums.
A little while back I found some nice-looking watercolor brush pens that reminded me of ones I used when I was younger, so I picked them up. I painted a little with them that day, then today I spent all evening working with them.
For me, there's just something about working with an unfamiliar medium that makes me feel like a kid again. When I was painting today, I wasn't terribly concerned with how things would turn out because I had low expectations of my ability. It didn't frustrate me when I'd make a weird stroke since I was just playing around to get more used to it. I got sillier than I do when I'm doodling and it was so much fun.
How do you feel when you're working with unfamiliar mediums?
